A follow-up from the DMOZ admin team.
We know this news comes as a shock to all of you. It did to us as well, but we’ve known for a little while that the future of DMOZ was hanging in the balance. Russ worked very hard inside AOL to try to find alternative support for our project after the current owner within the company decided to cease its support. There were some promising directions and developments, but in the end everything fell through. Since we recently learned that DMOZ’s days inside AOL were numbered, we have discussed ways to continue DMOZ as an independent entity. There was not enough time to develop firm plans before the imminent closure, but we are hopeful that the directory can be resurrected in some form before too long. We have discussed some details concerning the necessary infrastructure, software, cost, and funding, but much remains unclear at this time. However, all the data is saved and safe, and available to us going forward.
Much as we wish AOL could have continued its support for DMOZ, we must accept that our paths are diverging. We invite you to discuss your thoughts and ideas about the future of the directory and community in this thread. It is our understanding that this forum will remain available for an additional two weeks, which should be enough time to get some ideas on the table and decide on a forward plan. Let’s focus on what we can do.
